Social Workers Helping Social Workers (SWHSW) started in September, 1980, when LeClaire Bissell invited 50 MSW’s to meet for mutual support.  Almost all  accepted her invitation to meet, because they were hungry for colleague asociation.  Many had held the mistaken belief that they were the only social worker in the USA in recovery.  Since 1980 there have been over four hundred members in SWHSW with  chapters on the east and west coasts.
The purpose is to offer assistance to social workers and social work students who are struggling with alcoholism, drug dependence, eating disorders, codependency, adult chidlren of alcoholics issues, sexual compulsion, debt or gambling issues, work addiction, et cetera.  The purpose is also directed to those social workers recovering from these disorders.  Through sharing with other recovering social workers in our community, we enhance our own recovery and assist our profession in dealing successfully with life threatening issues.
